Dining With Susan: Shanghai Gourmet China Bistro

Dining With Susan: Shanghai Gourmet China Bistro

The best part about writing this column has been meeting many amazing people from all over the world. Winnie and Steven Guo (both born and raised in China) owners of the very successful Shanghai Gourmet China Bistro in Orange definitely fall into this category. They are the sweetest, kindest, generous and most hardworking couple I have ever met. The Guo’s truly value each and every customer that walk thru their door. They also have been loyal supporters of the Orange Town News from the beginning, so I thought it was time to revisit this popular restaurant that offers exotic and authentic Asian gourmet at its best. I originally profiled Shanghai Gourmet 8 years ago shortly after owners Winnie and Steven Guo took over and made significant improvements. Fast forward to 2016 and Shanghai Gourmet is busier than ever and definitely a favorite with many local Asian Americans. As I was doing my original research I discovered a review on Shanghai Gourmet written by local travel agent who posted his review on a “travel website”. Chris gave me his permission to share his thoughts with our readers, also mentioning that he was a regular at Shangai Gourmet. I thought it only fitting to again share his glowing review: “While continuing my quest for the great eateries of Connecticut, my journey led me down a path less traveled, steeped with flavor and freshness. My path, Chinese food. My destination, the Shangai Gourmet China Bistro. Located on the Boston Post Road in Orange, the Shanghai Gourmet takes conventional Chinese take-out to a much higher level of standards. Although the restaurant offers takeout and delivery service, by doing so you will miss the opportunity to dine in a quaint 30 seat dining room. Unlike most Chinese take-outs that offer small, shaky tables and uncomfortable metal chairs, Shanghai Gourmet has a more traditional dining room with rustic hardwood floors, along with beautiful cherry wood tables and chairs. The dining room is decorated with a natural, comfortable at home feeling accompanied with big bay windows allowing plenty of sunlight to illuminate your experience. There are many points of interest that separate Shanghai Gourmet from other Chinese take-outs; however the main difference is the use of fresh ingredients. The use of fresh mushrooms, tomatoes, peapods, authentic fresh herbs and a beautiful menu selection, places this restaurant miles ahead of most Chinese take-outs. The menu is a traditional separation of soups, appetizers, pork, poultry, seafood, beef, and vegetables with the addition of big bowl soups, stir fry vegetables and lovely sixteen item gourmet selection. Having ordered all the South East Asian selections, I recommend the Sambai Chicken. A perfect balance of tender chicken, fresh herbs and vegetables. Aside from the diverse menu, what really places Shanghai Gourmet on the top of my recommended list are the owners. More often than not you will find Winnie and Steven Guo working in the kitchen from morning to night. What an amazing team they make, providing an incredible dining experience with tasty fresh ingredients, a comfortable atmosphere and always service with a smile”. As Chris mentioned above the key to Shanghai Gourmet is their fresh ingredients. Every morning Steve travels to many local establishments searching for the best products that meet his high standards. Shanghai Gourmet offers a special

“Chef Recommendation” menu featuring many or their most popular dishes including Steamed Chilean Sea bass, Chicken & Shrimp Szechuan Style, Sautéed Spinach with Fresh Garlic, Scrambled Egg with Shrimp & Chives, Shredded Beef with Chili Pepper, just to name a few.
