Ezra Academy in Woodbridge is pleased to sponsor and produce “Golda’s Balcony”. Written by William Gibson, this play provides a dramatic look into the personal and public life of Golda Meir, the former Prime Minister of Israel from 1969 to 1974. The play opens on the eve of the 1973 Yom Kippur war, and uses flashbacks to tell the story of Golda Meir and her struggle to balance her fervent Zionism, marriage, children, idealism, power, war and peace, and the strength it took to shape the destiny of a nation. The play originally opened in 2003, starring Tovah Feldshuh, and was the longest running one woman show on Broadway.
In this production, Golda Meir is portrayed by Sandra Laub, and is the only actor on stage for the entire 90 minute performance. Ms Laub has previously performed this play in the 2nd Story Theater in Bristol, RI and synagogues in Providence and New London. Broadway World of Rhode Island gave it rave reviews, citing Ms Laub as “captivating, personable and an entirely engaging storyteller.” The Warwick Times cites, “Ms Laub’s brilliant performance makes us believe that she is Golda, with her sad penetrating eyes, crisp language…looking into the eyes of the audience making them feel for her and her cause.” The Providence Journal states “Sandra Laub is fabulous as Meir, an actress who captures Meir’s drive, as well as her humor, and humanness.”
When interviewed Ms Laub shared, “ This is very meaningful for me to play this part. It is my heritage, my Jewishness, my parents, my grandparents, my daughter. My connection to this part is a reflection of my personal connection to Israel and the Jewish faith. I travelled to Israel last summer and witnessed firsthand the history, the people, the land, the war, and the struggle to keep Israel a safe, homeland for the Jews. It is very personal for me to present this story.”
Ms. Laub’s theater credits include New York Shakespeare Festival, Circle Rep, WPA, the Gamm Theater in Providence , and many others.
All proceeds from this play are to help defray the costs of Ezra Academy’s 8th grade trip to Israel this April. Melanie Waynik, Ezra’s Head of School states, “One of our most treasured traditions at Ezra Academy is our eighth grade annual trip to Israel. This two week experience serves as a powerful culminating event in the Ezra experience, providing our students with an enduring connection with the State of Israel and a stronger commitment to the Jewish people.”
