On Tuesday, April 27, 2021, the Woodbridge Board of Education unanimously authorized the hire of James (Jimmy) Sapia for employment as Assistant Principal of Beecher Road School effective July 1, 2021.
A sixteen-year elementary and middle school educator in Stamford, Mr. Sapia received a 2012 Spotlight Teacher Award, and then was named 2014-15 Stamford Teacher of the Year. Subsequently, he was named in 2016 an ASCD Emerging Leader in Education, as well as a PBS Local Digital Innovator in Connecticut (2016). He has presented at the state and regional level on the use of literacy to foster empathy, and was one of six founders of EdCamp Southwestern CT, where he also presented on the integration of literacy and technology. In the Stamford Public Schools, Mr. Sapia has led a professional development structure over the past three years that generated 96 learning sessions for 500 staff members in the past year alone.
Of 291 applicants for the Woodbridge vacancy, Mr. Sapia rose to the top through all five stages of the application process, including an interview committee of representative parents, teachers, support staff, and Board of Education members, as well as a performance task focused on teaching and learning. His references describe Jimmy as a “highly motivated teacher-leader who has an unmatched passion for education and professional learning,” “transformational,” with a “steadfast and unwavering commitment to student voice and choice.”
Currently a grade 6 teacher as well as a technology integration specialist at Rippowam Middle School, Mr. Sapia lives in Trumbull, where he resides with his wife (a speech-language pathologist) and their two sons. Outside of education, his interests include hiking, mountain biking, reading, traveling, and sports.
Woodbridge Board of Education Chair Lynn Piascyk commented, “Jimmy Sapia is committed to building positive school culture, providing quality learning experiences, and promoting teamwork with the entire school community with the ultimate goal of student growth and achievement. I am confident that he will bring a wealth of excitement and energy to his work.”
