The Jewish Coalition for Literacy (JCL), an award winning, nondenominational and non sectarian group of volunteer reading partners in the New Haven Public elementary school is delighted to honor its volunteers on Wednesday, May 16, 9:30 a.m., in the JCC’s auditorium in Woodbridge. The event is free and open to the community.
The Storycrafters of Hudson, NY, will entertain and enlighten JCL volunteer reading partners with their unique musical duo-style of storytelling that integrates ethnic and folk musical instruments, song, and dance into the stories. Melissa Hickey, Connecticut’s statewide reading director, will express the exceptional value the volunteers give when sharing the love of reading, learning and conversation with their elementary New Haven public school students.
Educators from JCL’s seven partner New Haven public schools and other local children’s literacy advocates are invited to attend the event to honor JCL’s reading partners. Refreshments will be donated by Abel Caterers.
With about 175 JCL reading partners, volunteering in seven New Haven Public Schools, JCL’s diverse group spans different faiths, educational backgrounds and experiences. Each volunteer commits one hour a week to read one-on-one with assigned students, sharing the pleasures of reading, learning and conversation, and giving the child the opportunity to express themselves to an interested adult. Volunteers and students enjoy reading and conversation with each other to form nurturing relationships. JCL is an award winning-project of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven.
