As a Selectman in Woodbridge since 2017, Joe is running for re-election to a third term. He serves as liaison to the Board of Police Commissioners, Board of Fire Commissioners and Town Plan and Zoning Commission.
Before his election to the Board of Selectmen, his twelve terms as a State Senator, from 1993 to 2016, were distinguished by numerous Committee roles, including co-chair of the Insurance and Real Estate Committee, vice-chair of both the Banks Committee and the Commerce Committee and chair of the Appropriations Committee. He also served as Chief Deputy President Pro Tempore of the State Senate.
Among his many accomplishments while a member of the Connecticut General Assembly, Joe worked tirelessly to encourage economic growth and job creation, ease the tax burden for families and small businesses, support youth development programs and public schools, and ensure access to quality services and programs for senior citizens. Joe created the CT Biomedical Research Fund which seeks to advance research on eight major illnesses, and he was a leader in critical breast cancer legislation. He also created the Connecticut Hall of Fame which celebrates individuals who have made outstanding contributions to our state and country.
Prior to his 24 years working in Hartford, Joe began his service to the community by holding elected and appointed positions in Woodbridge. He was a member of the Woodbridge Board of Education from 1989 to 1993, and on the Town Plan and Zoning Commission from 1986 to 1988. He is well-versed in both Town and State governmental issues and brings a depth of knowledge to his involvement on the Board of Selectmen, particularly in these challenging economic times.
Joe and his wife Pat, who works as the Woodbridge Tax Collector, moved to Woodbridge in 1977 to raise their six children. They are the proud grandparents of nineteen grandchildren. Joe graduated from Wilbur Cross High School in New Haven, where he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. He attended the University of Connecticut, where he played football. Joe is an avid runner – you may see him out along the roads of Woodbridge in every season and in all kinds of weather!
