Jorge Cabrera is the son of immigrants from Puerto Rico who worked hard to ensure he would be first in his family to attend college. He currently lives in Hamden with his wife Rebecca, a public-school principal, and his twin boys Jorgie and Gabe, both of whom attend Hamden public schools. He has worked for over 20 years to ensure that workers have dignity in their jobs by fighting for fair wages, access to quality healthcare, a safe work environment, and a secure retirement. His commitment to fairness, equity, and service to his community have led him to seek public office.
Jorge is running for State Senate because he believes that positive change is possible in Connecticut with the right leadership. Jorge believes that all working people should be treated with respect. This means that we must fight for pay equity, paid family and medical leave for all, and a transition to a $15 minimum wage. But, to improve the economic future of this state, we must also invest in new job opportunities for the people of this district. This means improving infrastructure to attract new businesses and promoting and expanding job training and apprenticeship programs to make sure our workforce is ready for the careers of the future. It also means investing heavily in our public education systems, community colleges, and state universities. Education is the first step towards empowerment and success and should be the priority of all our representatives in Hartford. And, as municipalities receive less funding from the state and must place more economic burdens on their taxpayers, Jorge believes that our lawmakers must put our towns first and fight for proper and fair state funding for education and municipal aid.
Jorge would also be a champion in protecting our citizens’ rights. This means standing up for women by fighting for workplace equality and reinforcing our state’s protection of reproductive choice. Because a healthy environment benefits us all, Jorge believes in making water a public trust and protecting our open space. Jorge would also strive to uphold Connecticut’s strict gun safety laws and pursue ways to make our public spaces, schools, and workplaces safer through a ban on ghost guns.
In this volatile political climate, our local representatives are the last line of defense against dangerous policies coming from the Republican party at both the federal and local level. The people of the 17th district deserve someone who will fight for our community in Hartford and stand up for all our residents. Jorge Cabrera would welcome the opportunity to serve this district as your State Senator.
