Ten students from Amity Middle School in Bethany participated in the New Haven Chapter of the Math Counts Competition on Saturday, February 2nd. There were sixteen schools present and approximately one hundred ten students competing. Each school sent a team of four students who competed in the team level of competition. In addition to the team round, there were two individual rounds of competition. The teams that placed in the top three of the competition and other individuals scoring in the top twenty-five percent of students continue on to the state competition.
Amity Middle School in Bethany placed second in the Team Round of competition. The students who made up the team of four were: Henry Yang, Piyush Bahel, Deven Huang, and Iris Yan. In addition, six other students from Amity Middle School in Bethany competed: Anushka Acharya, Zoe Fleischman, Mingue Zha, Alesandro Gopal, Allen Liu, and Luhai Tang. Two of the students, Deven Huang and Henry Yang, made it to the final countdown round where the top eight of all the students competing get called down to answer math questions head to head in front of an audience.
The team of four from Amity Middle School in Bethany (Henry Yang, Piyush Bahel, Deven Huang, and Iris Yan) placed second in the entire competition. They will now move on to compete at the state competition on March 9th.
