Tara Laugeni Named Student of the Month

The Woodbridge Rotary Club honored Amity High School senior Tara Laugeni as Student of the Month for March.  Academically, Tara has earned a high GPA while managing all of her extra-curricular activities.  “Tara is a born leader that loves working and collaborating with others; with an overwhelming view of the vision.  I believe Tara is a solution-focused individual who is willing to lead or assist as needed to achieve the group’s goals”, stated School Counselor Karen Waterman who nominated Tara as Student of the Month.

Tara’s extra-curricular activities include being a two-year captain of the girls’ basketball team of which she was the fifth girl to join the 1,000-point club in Amity’s history.  Tara is a founding member of the UMttr club and has served as an effective co-president for two years.  The club was started by a student who lost a family member and started a chapter.  The UMttr’s mission is to make students and faculty aware of the five signs of depression, as well as bring joy into the school.  Ms. Laugeni and other board members have made presentations to the entire faculty, select health educators, and co-teach a lesson with the school’s health teacher to freshman.  Tara participated through the club in such positive youth development activities such as organizing a school-wide 3×3 tournament, and making over 300 post –it notes with positive messages and placing them on desks, car windows and bathroom mirrors.  Tara stated, “It has taught me to be more compassionate and aware of mental illness and the stigmas that surround it, especially surrounding suicide.  It has opened my eyes to make me more prepared to help those around me.”

Other volunteer activities that Tara Laugeni  participates in includes volunteering for the annual Laugeni Family foundation Children’s golf classic, working with special need students through Easter Seals and Sarah, and serving as a Pop Warner volunteer for five years; currently as Concession manager and Ad Book Creator.

Ms. Laugeni will be attending Endicott College in the fall and will be playing basketball for the Gulls.

Each month, the Woodbridge Rotary Club partners with Solun Tapas Restaurant to honor an Amity High school student.  Rotarian Dr. Guy Stella presented Tara Laugeni with a certificate of recognition.
