A certified and licensed Kidding Around Yoga (KAY) teacher, pre-school teacher and religious school teacher, Sosensky is receiving rave reviews for the yoga classes she teaches to pre-school and elementary school children in public and private schools, summer camps, Girl Scout Troops and birthday parties, in central and southern Connecticut. Between family and children’s yoga classes and mindfulness training for teachers, Sosensky aims to bring a calm clarity into New Haven County classrooms, preparing even the youngest of students to manage their emotions, thoughts and minds, so they can focus and be successful in school and in their daily routine.
Sosensky recently launched her “Mindfulness in the Classroom Workshop,” a Professional Development Day program for Teachers designed to help youth manage their emotions so they can learn more clearly and thoroughly. “Mindfulness in the classroom is so important,” Sosensky says. “As educators, we expect our children to listen, be attentive and respect authority. We teach the ‘hands-off’ policy where we use our ‘words’ instead of our ‘hands’ to solve problems. Throughout this learning process, children are faced with unfamiliar emotions that can be overwhelming. They need to learn how to manage the feelings they experience in their day-to-day activities such as jealousy, anger, embarrassment and anxiety so their minds are free to learn academically.”
Sosensky’s yoga classes include pranayama (breathing exercises), asanas (yoga poses), meditation and chanting, all of which have a significant long-term effect on a child’s development. “Through the use of mindfulness games such as Toega-yoga and ZIP,ZAP,ZOP, I help children strengthen their skills to focus and concentrate in and outside of the classroom,” Sosensky says. “The KAY system utilizes the yoga poses, creatively tucked into partner yoga, games and activities, with original music and stories.”
Sosensky’s students sing, salute the sun, jog and dance, limbo, massage and so much more. “It is crucial for children to learn how to find peace on the inside, regardless of what is happening on the outside,” she says. “The benefits of yoga and mindfulness in the classroom are simply ‘OM’azing!”
