Bruce Marien
Candidate:
Amity Board of Education
I am a long-time resident of Woodbridge. My three children graduated from our public school system. As a second-career educator, I recently retired from being a science teacher and varsity wrestling coach at Amity High School. I have an established history of contributing to the local community through active leadership roles in Boy Scouts of America, Woodbridge Fathers Baseball League, and Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
Prior to my Amity High School experience, I was a professor of chemistry in the Connecticut State University system and completed a 25-year industrial career as a Vice President of Research and Development in a global chemical company.
Academically, after achieving success as an undergraduate scholar-athlete, I earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Maryland and began my career in industry. As a 50+ year member of the American Chemical society, I have published over 20 technical papers and am a named inventor on seven U.S. utility patents. I continue to be a life-long teacher and learner.
Reason for running for Amity Board of Education: As a parent, a teacher and a coach in the Amity community for 38 years, I offer a much-needed perspective for the Amity Board of Education. Our three children passed through the Amity school system to become successful adults. After a long career as an executive in the chemical industry, I taught chemistry at the high school and coached the varsity wrestling team. I am particularly concerned with the decreased academic ranking of our school versus its peers and the changed teaching/learning environment in the school post-COVID.
